Injuries absolutely decimated two of the better teams last week, as George Lopez and Samuel L. Jackson both failed to score 500 fantasy points. This is territory usually reserved for Adam McKay, James Denton and Spike Lee. Samuel L. Jackson's team was scheduled to play 31 games last week, but managed only 21 due to injuries and that ridiculous flu that has taken hold of the NBA. Chris Kaman and Corey Maggette never played a game, while Tony Parker only played once. George Lopez received stats for only 23 of his 30 games due to Jamaal Tinsley, Caron Butler and Pau Gasol injuries.
Too bad for them, right? The other big news is that Bill Simmons lost again, this time to Bernie Mac. Simmons has now lost three of his last five match-ups, slipping to third behind Tony Potts and Zach Gilford. During that same period of time, Kenny's Kids have won four of five. Just saying.
Other notes... Adam McKay has now won two in a row, propelling him from last to second to last. That's right, he was propelled. Granted, the two teams he beat (James Denton and Spike Lee) have combined for seven wins this season, but congrats go to McKay. The league has become top heavy, as eight of the 12 teams are .500 or better. That couldn't happen without the contributions of McKay, Denton, Lee and Bernie Mac. The league thanks you.
Let's take a look at this week's match-ups. Really, let's do it.
Tony Potts (11-3) vs. Samuel L. Jackson (7-7)
Samuel L. Jackson has jumped out to a quick Monday lead, but it's going to be a long week and a half. Jackson took a risk by starting the banged up and flu-ridden Corey Maggette and Chris Kaman this week, but that risk has paid off so far. He is still without Michael Redd and Tony Parker, and you just can't go half strength against the powerhouse that is Tony Potts. That's right, I said it.
Prediction: Potts retains top spot.
Zach Gilford (10-4) vs. Spike Lee (4-10)
I guess I need to stop making fun of Zach Gilford's team. Now in second place, Gilford has won three straight and four of five. Spike Lee has lost four of five. Gilford has an early lead, but can he keep it?
Prediction: Come on. Of course he can.
Bill Simmons (10-4) vs. James Denton (3-11)
Simmons actually trails early after a big Monday from Denton. Chalk it up, victory for Denton! Ok, we'll let them play it out. With the emergence of Jose Calderon, Denton's team really isn't that bad. The health of Andrew Bynum and Jason Terry would certainly help as he would not be forced to start players like Andrea Bargnani and Ryan Gomes, although Gomes has looked good of late. Won't help Denton this week, but he could be dangerous down the road.
Prediction: Simmons regains his footing. Oh, and the Patriots lost.
George Lopez (9-5) vs. Will Ferrell (7-7)
Lopez had been on a roll, but injuries derailed his path to the top of the league. He's relatively healthy now, with Caron Butler and Pau Gasol apparently both back in the lineup. That said, his team has cooled, and Will Ferrell is healthy and competitive. Ferrell's lineup is scary, outside of Boris Diaw, and he's won four straight. Where did this come from?
Prediction: Maybe Diaw will make the difference for a Lopez victory, but I think that Ferrell breaks out the upset.
Donald Faison (7-7) vs. Adam McKay (3-11)
McKay has won two straight while Faison has lost two. Faison's success depends significantly on the health of Kevin Garnett. Without KG, he has no chance -- yes, even against McKay. McKay just rolls out his bench warmers and hopes for the best. His players are solid enough to give him a shot every week -- even if it's not a great shot.
Prediction: It's a great shot this time around. Garnett appears to be out for another two games or so, which opens the door for a McKay win.
Kenny Smith (7-7) vs. Bernie Mac (6-8)
Kenny. Wow. Only Tony Potts has managed to solve the Kenny Smith puzzle during the past seven weeks. Some would suggest that makes Kenny dangerous, others that he is due to lose. Bernie is dealing with an injury to his best player, Marcus Camby (yes! it's possible!), that could prevent any hopes for a victory. Kenny, on the other hand, is largely healthy minus a banged up Mike Conley.
Prediction: LeBron James carries Kenny to another win.
