We have a new leader, folks. Well, sorta. Bill Simmons took down Tony Potts in a 905.62 - 780.54 rumble, giving him a share of the lead. Simmons technically leads the league due to head-to-head tie-breaker, but both teams are 9-2 and Potts still has 200 more points than Simmons. It was a critical match-up for "home field" as it is the only time these two teams will play this season, barring a playoff match-up.
I was tempted to pick Kenny Smith over Zach Gilford last week, but I couldn't stop laughing each time I attempted to type "K-e-n-n-y w-i-n-s." Well, Kenny wins, and has now won four straight.
There were two games decided by fewer than five fantasy points. Spike Lee defeated Donald Faison by about four and Will Ferrell slipped by Bernie Mac by three points. Perceived underdogs have made winning fashionable lately, resulting in a crowded standings from places three through 10. Eight teams are within three wins of one another.
Oh, and Adam McKay lost. Again. It's easy to be hard on McKay, but it should be noted that more than 27% of all teams that drafted Gilbert Arenas in this format are sitting in last place. Another 21.5% are in second to last. So, let's cut McKay some slack.
Let's get to this week's predictions.
Bill Simmons (9-2) vs. Kenny Smith (5-6)
These two teams met in week one of the season, with Simmons squeaking out a 668-615 victory. Kenny is on a roll, however, and is no longer the doormat of the league. Simmons has a two game advantage this week, but Kenny's largest obstacle will be the fact that LeBron James plays only two games.
Prediction: Start the trash talk now, Bill. Victory is yours.
Tony Potts (9-2) vs. Donald Faison (6-5)
On one hand, you have to feel bad for Faison after losing by four points to Spike Lee. When you take a closer look, however, retract that sympathy. Faison finished the week with the league's lowest fantasy point total. Spike Lee finished with the second lowest. Pathetic. Both teams deserved to lose. Faison hopes to rebound, but a win won't come easy against one of the league's elite. Faison has a three-game advantage, but is dealing with an injury to Josh Howard. Potts has only two games from Chris Paul, his best player.
Prediction: Faison finds a way to win. The two games from Paul is the kicker for Potts, who needs to have a much better average from his players than Faison to overcome the three-game disadvantage and win.
George Lopez (7-4) vs. Spike Lee (4-7)
Lopez continues to abuse the competition, posting a 938 point total last week to add to his league leading point total for the season. George's team is downright scary and Spike's team is, well, not. Spike could have 40 games to George's six this week, and I'd still pick Lopez.
Prediction: Lopez in a laugher.
Samuel L. Jackson (7-4) vs. Zach Gilford (7-4)
One would think that this would be the tightest battle of the week. Two teams with identical records and separated by 500 fantasy points on the season (Sam with the edge). Jackson, though, has struggled through injuries lately, but still manages to win. Whether it's Tim Duncan, Michael Redd, Tony Parker, Corey Maggette or (now) Raymond Felton, someone on this team always seems to be hurt. Luckily for Sam, they're never hurt at the same time. Combine the injury factor with Gilford's five game advantage for the week, and you have to give Zach the edge.
Prediction: Gilford scores the most points of any team this week.
Bernie Mac (4-7) vs. Adam McKay (1-10)
Back when I was little, I used to fall and hit my large melon a lot. I can remember a time I fell in the snow, cracked open my head, and my mom gave me some hot cocoa to make it all better. After Bernie Mac's three-point loss last week to Will Ferrell, Adam McKay is Bernie's hot chocolate. McKay hasn't won since week three, and is becoming the league's "Automatic W." The first time these two teams met, Bernie won by about 140 points -- while McKay had Arenas in the lineup. This week, Bernie will have only two games from Kobe Bryant, but it just doesn't matter.
Prediction: Bernie sips cocoa to victory.
Will Ferrell (4-7) vs. James Denton (3-8)
Both teams desperately need a win this week to remain in the running. Only the top four advance to the playoffs, so a loss -- particularly by Denton -- could be a killer. Ferrell's team is banged up, dealing with injuries to both Tracy McGrady and Ron Artest. Additionally, he has only two games apiece from his two best players this week, Dirk Nowitzki and Yao Ming.
Prediction: All signs point to a Denton victory in the lowest scoring match-up of the week.
