A weekly look inside the NBA Cares Celebrity Fantasy League

PLANET HOLLYWOOD FANTASY, Nov. 27 -- Things have become chippy in the NBA Cares Celebrity Fantasy League.

Last year, Bill Simmons and Bernie Mac fought for NCCFL supremacy and battled on the message boards as well. (I for one, would have loved to have seen what either could have come up with had we allowed profanity on the boards.)

This year, it looks as if Simmons may be the flashpoint again, yet this time he may raising the ire of one Adam McKay.

NBA Cares Celebrity Charities
Celebs are playing for money towards their charities:
Adam McKay: National Resources Defense Council
Bernie Mac: Sarcodosis Foundation/American Cancer Society
Bill Simmons: Scituate Basketball Association, Inc.
Dean Cain: Malibu Foundation for Youth and Families
George Lopez: Kidney Foundation
Jimmy Kimmel & Cousin Sal: Talk about Curing Autism
Kenny Smith: Aim High Foundation
Meat Loaf: Painted Turtle Foundation
Pam Anderson/Kid Rock: Pepperdine Baseball
Samuel L. Jackson: Artists for a New South Africa
Spike Lee: Morehouse College Journalism and Sports Program
Will Ferrell: Cancer for College
For the second consecutive week, Simmons complained about the league’s waiver process:

“Is there any way we can reward the weaker teams by allowing them to pick up the best available free agents each week and make it impossible for the stronger teams to help themselves team in any way? Oh, wait, that's already in place. Forget it.”

Other members of the NCCFL chose to take Simmons’ comments one of two ways: Let it roll off your back, which 10 of them chose to do, or respond, which is what Adam McKay did.

“I have never seen,” McKay started his message board missive, “....a crankier soon to be 4-0 team. Shouldn't you be dating fantasy league Mariah Carrey and hanging out with fanntasy league Jammie Foxx at some fantasy league south beach Miami club?”

Allow me to echo McKay doubling nearly every consonant in his message: mmeoww! Yes, McKay seemed to take exception to a guy who did move to 4-0 about not being able to get better. And it’s easy to understand. Simmons is not only the sole undefeated team in the NCCFL, but also he has the most points scored so far (4367.5) and has score 1000 more points than his opponents combined in his four wins.

So, what’s there to complain about?

Well, maybe Simmons is feeling the heat. Three-point shooters, thieves and shot blockers play a big role in this league. A fantasy owner gets five points for a made three, five for a blocked shot and five for a steal. Simmons has guys who play well across the board, but doesn’t have anyone who puts up huge numbers in any of those categories.

McKay is 3-1 and has a formidable squad with Chris Paul, Rashard Lewis, re-born fantasy god Emeka Okafor and is getting superlative performances from Luke Ridnour and Monta Ellis.

Pam Rock also has an embarrassment of riches at guard with Baron Davis and Gilbert Arenas.

Then there’s Simmons’ opponent for this week, Will Ferrell, who’s 3-1, a game behind Bill in their division. Ferrell has Ray Allen and Mike Miller taking care of the threes, while Lamar Odom and Shawn Marion fill the stat sheet everywhere else.

Maybe that’s why Bill’s feelin’ the pinch, and Simmons and Ferrell is definitely our Match-up of the Week for Week 5.

Anyway, looks like it’s going to be a fun season.

In other news, Kenny Smith is no longer a NCCFL laughing stock. He won his second straight week, doubling his win total from last year from one to two. Congrats, Kenny. This week, Mr. Smith will attempt to try to push George Lopez further down the standings.

McKay will try to drop Jimmy Kimmel and Cousin Sal to 1-4 this week, while Pam Rock gets a 2-2 Spike Lee.

Bernie Mac will try to make it three straight against Meat Loaf, who has an identical 2-2 record, while the 1-3 Sam Jackson will try to keep Dean Cain winless.
