Marcus Williams: Working Out at Warriors Facility
Update: Williams, who is the leading candidate to start at point guard for Golden State, is the only veteran working out at the Warriors practice facility, the San Francisco Examiner reports.
Analysis: The ankle injury to Monta Ellis elevates Williams' value for the upcoming season, though nothing about his two years with the Nets suggests he's ready for a full-time gig.
Chris Quinn: Two Standing Offers
Update: Quinn, a restricted free agent, has two standing offers from the Heat, the South Florida Sun-Sentinel reports.
Analysis: One offer is the one-year qualifying offer of $972,000, with the other a two-year deal. Quinn started 25 games at point guard for Miami last season, including the final 13 games, and would have a good chance of more starts this year. "It's up to Quinny," Heat President Pat Riley said. "We've offered him a couple years from the qualifying offer. He hasn't been able to bring us an offer. We want Quinny back. So he has the choice."
Kosta Perovic: Off to Spain
Update: The Warriors have let Perovic out of his contract with the team so that he can play for Pamesa Valencia in Spain, the San Francisco Examiner reports.
Analysis: Golden State is all too glad to let him walk because Perovic was guaranteed $1.6 million in 2008-09. He played in seven games for the Warriors in 2007-08, as well as seeing action for their D-League affiliate in San Bernadino (Calif.).
Kobe Bryant: Opts Against Surgery
Update: Bryant (finger) has now decided to forgo surgery to repair ligament damage in his right pinky finger, according to his website.
Analysis: Bryant had originally planned to have surgery, but the 12-week recovery time would have caused him to miss part of the regular season. Bryant was unaffected by the injury last year, and we don't expect it to limit him this year either.
Channing Frye: Ankle Surgery
Update: Frye will be out 8-10 weeks after undergoing surgery on Monday to remove bone spurs from his left ankle, the Oregonian reports.
Analysis: It's a tough break for Frye, who was looking to solidify his role as backup power forward with the Blazers this season. Frye will miss all of training camp, giving Ike Diogu a chance to grab hold of the reserve power forward role. The good news is that Frye should only miss one or two weeks of the regular season. Deep leagues should still think about grabbing the sweet shooting forward late, but it could take Frye a few weeks after returning to round into game shape.
