NEW YORK, Sept. 25, 2007 – As part of the NBA’s continuing commitment to giving back on a global basis, the Boston Celtics, Memphis Grizzlies, Minnesota Timberwolves and Toronto Raptors will host 14 community outreach activities over 11 days in Turkey, Spain, Italy and England during NBA Europe Live presented by EA SPORTS™, from Oct. 1 – 11.
Building on the tradition started during Europe Live 2006, NBA Cares events led by current and former NBA players will include, free open practices for local children and U.S. Military personnel and their families, Special Olympics basketball clinics, and the creation of NBA Cares Learn & Play Spaces featuring newly refurbished basketball courts in partnership with adidas. The NBA has created more than 50 places where kids outside the U.S. can live, learn or play.
“NBA Europe Live is another opportunity for our business partners, teams and players to demonstrate leadership in social responsibility and to leverage our game to make a lasting impact on communities and people in need,” said Kathy Behrens, Senior Vice President, NBA Community and Player Programs.
In Istanbul, NBA Cares, Minnesota Timberwolves players and team owner Glen Taylor, in partnership with the Starkey Hearing Foundation, will distribute state-of-the-art hearing aids to over 1,000 children. Timberwolves players will also dedicate a new NBA Cares Learn & Play Center in partnership with the home textile brand in Turkey, Taç, consisting of a technology center, library and refurbished court, at Avcýlar Atatürk Ýlköðretim Okulu, an Istanbul school that witnessed the earthquakes of 1999.
NBA Europe Live will feature four NBA teams conducting training camp in Europe and competing against top Euroleague Basketball teams in a series of exhibition games. The Minnesota Timberwolves will host training camp and play games in Istanbul, Turkey and London, England; the Boston Celtics will be in Rome, Italy and London, England; the Toronto Raptors will be in Treviso, Italy and Madrid, Spain, and Memphis Grizzlies will be in Malaga and Madrid, Spain.
NBA Cares is the league's social responsibility initiative that builds on the NBA's long tradition of addressing important social issues in the United States and around the world. Through this umbrella program, the NBA, its teams and players have committed to donating $100 million to charity, providing a million hours of hands on service to the community and creating 250 places where kids and families can live, learn or play. NBA Cares works with internationally-recognized youth-serving programs that support education, youth and family development, and health-related causes, including: UNICEF; the Make-A-Wish Foundation and the Global Business Coalition on HIV/AIDS, Malaria and Tuberculosis.
