Areas of strength:
With Rudy Gay, O.J. Mayo and Zach Randolph, they've got a solid triumvirate that can fill the basket and put points on the scoreboard. Contrary to his previous reputation, Randolph joined the team smoothly and was a solid presence on the floor and in the locker room and could help take them to the next level which is back into the playoffs.

Needs work:
They need athleticism and size on the perimeter in order to cut off dribble penetration and opponents scoring at the rim. They also need more consistent play from start to finish by point guard Mike Conley.

Two Stats That Matter:
-- Ranked 26th in the league in opponents' field goal percentage.

33.7 -- Also ranked 26th in the league in 3-point shooting.

The Way to Go:
First things first and that means getting restricted free agent Gay under contract to enable the rebuilding program to finally blossom. Team owner Michael Heisley has repeatedly said the Grizzlies will do what it takes to keep Gay in the fold. They could use another veteran presence in the locker room to help head off lapses in concentration and they definitely need an outside shooting weapon.
