Free Agents:

Areas of Strength:

Paul, a ball-hawking scoring dynamo, is arguably the best point guard in the league and the perfect guy to build around. West isn’t too shabby.

Needs Work:

Chemistry was shot with the botched Chandler deal. Ability to generate offense outside of Paul or West.

Two Stats That Matter:

  • 58 -- Margin of loss (121-63) in last Playoffs home game
  • 5 -- Number of starting centers this season, with Chandler getting the most starts (45)

The Way To Go:

Finances figure to rule the day, as George Shinn looks for ways to shed payroll for a franchise $10 million over the cap. The team already tried to give away Chandler, a key to the 2007-08 division-title run. Getting younger, cheaper and better doesn’t seem logical, but those are the marching orders in the Big (not so) Easy. A deal of a core piece or two not named Paul or West and the acquisition of a higher draft pick would be a start. Recent picks Armstrong and Wright need to take on larger roles. Without the right moves, the Hornets could be headed back to the lottery in the loaded West.
