An early entry candidate for the 2009 NBA Draft.
Named to ACC All-Freshman Team and also earned Third Team All-ACC honors as a redshirt freshman. Unanimous selection for All-ACC Tournament First Team as a redshirt freshman. Holds N.C. State freshman records for scoring (605), rebounds (264), field goals (193), free throws (158) minutes (1,238), and games started (35). Finished junior season with 1,273 points, 27th best in school history.
Led team in scoring (13.3 ppg) and blocks (1.0 bpg) and ranked second in rebounding (6.0 rpg) and assists (2.4 apg). Scored in double figures in 21 of 30 games, while also notching four double-doubles. Scored a season-high 25 points along with 13 rebounds against NC Central. Scored 24 points in three games, against Eastern Carolina, Marquette and Florida. Added 17 rebounds against Eastern Carolina, a season-high. Dished out a career-high 10 assists while posting a double-double against Towson.
Averaged 8.5 points, 4.6 rebounds and 2.0 assists, while starting 19 of 30 games. Led team in free-throw percentage (.822). Scored in double figures in 11 of 30 games. Scored a season-high 21 points against South Carolina. Scored 20 points along with six rebounds and three assists against Cincinnati. Grabbed a season-high 12 rebounds in the season opener against William & Mary. Dished out a season-high seven assists twice, against Western Carolina and Boston College.
Led team in scoring (16.8 ppg) and rebounding (7.3 rpg), also leading all ACC freshman in both categories. Ranked ninth overall in ACC in scoring, sixth in rebounding, 10th in field-goal percentage (.474), and sixth in minutes (34.4 mpg). Scored in double figures in 34 of 36 games, pulling down double digit rebounds nine times, and posting eight double-doubles, third best in the ACC. Scored a career-high 30 points along with seven rebounds in a win over Duke, shooting 10-for-17 from the field and 10-for-11 from the free throw line. Grabbed a career-high 19 rebounds against UNC-Wilmington, while also adding 27 points on 8-for-14 shooting.
Played in five games before ending his season with a stress fracture in his leg. Earned a medical hardship for the season. Averaged 2.8 points and 2.6 rebounds.
Strengths: Strong and versatile power forward with an inside-out offensive game. Has a developing face-up game and is a good three-point shooter for his size. Good footwork and touch in the post with a solid assortment of moves.
Personal: Son of Tony and Stacy Costner. Father played in college at St. Joseph’s and was a second-round pick of the Bullets in 1984. Grew up in Greece where his father played overseas. Majoring in public & interpersonal communications.
