The Rockets seemed grounded midway through the year, when Yao Ming went down with a foot injury just as the team was hitting its stride. But to the surprise of the league, Houston -- already in the midst of a nine-game win streak -- kept winning, reeling off a total of 22 straight victories, even temporarily taking over the top spot out West. By season's end the Rockets had slipped to fifth, and were knocked out in the first round by the Jazz. Tracy McGrady posted another strong season, and the play of workhorse forwards Carl Landry and Luis Scola energized the squad.
With their late first-round pick (No. 25 overall), they'll likely target a swingman whose slashing ability provides a scoring option off the bench.
"It's a bottom-line business, and the bottom line is that the Rockets didn't show up for start of the game that ended their season.
They were outworked by the Utah Jazz from the beginning, and there's no excuse for that.
Maybe they were going to lose anyway, but the way they went down should force general manager Daryl Morey to take a hard look at his roster."
