After a 48-win regular season, normally a team feels pretty good about itself. Not the Warriors. Despite a record that would have given in the fourth best record in the Eastern Conference, Golden State was on the outside looking in when the playoffs started in the West, as the Nuggets edged the boys from the Bay by two games for the eighth seed.
Now, with a roster that features more free agents and player options (eight) than players under contract (six), the 2008-09 Warriors squad promises to look a little, if not a lot, different. Head coach Don Nelson has never been known for his defense, so even though the inability to get stops may have been the team flaw that stopped Golden State from making the postseason, don't expect the Warriors to add a defensive stalwart to the fold. Instead of going for a guy with tree trunks for legs to plug up the middle, Nellie is more apt to look for a player with long branches for limbs to fit in with his team that burns up the floor.
"The Warriors were the NBA's third-youngest team this season, and Coach Don Nelson said after the finale that his team relied too much on inexperienced players to try to fill the void left by the trade of star guard Jason Richardson."
