Good, but not nearly good enough. That has been the story for the Denver Nuggets over the last five years, five trips to the postseason, and five First Round exits. This season, they won 50 games, only to be swept by the Lakers. With not much room for growth, it may be time for the Nuggets to make serious changes to their personnel or their fast-pace philosophy.
"Sometimes it's tough for a perennial playoff team to improve via the draft, and, though it comes with an asterisk, the Nuggets are a perennial playoff team. Five consecutive playoff berths have been followed by five straight oustings, and none has been followed by a lottery pick. But look at the Lakers and Pistons and their young role players, picked after successful seasons.
"Perhaps North Carolina's Ty Lawson could be that pick for Denver, a young point guard with sparkling skills. He's at the NBA pre-draft camp this week. Another option would be to go for size, knowing that both Denver starting posts are 30-plus. Early indications are that Robin Lopez, a tough shot-blocker from Stanford, would be available at No. 20.
