A Midsummer Night’s Draft Dream

SECAUCUS, NJ, June 25, 2007 -- If you were to dream about hearing your name on Draft Night, where would you picture yourself hearing your name being called by Commissioner David Stern? Right there in the green room in front of the stage? Somewhere in the WaMu Theater at Madison Square Garden cheap seats with the chanting Knicks fans? At home, surrounded by family and friends?

Any of those places, right? As for center Glen "Big Baby" Davis of Louisiana State University, well, he's looking for a little more solitude.

"I have no idea. I have no idea," Davis said. "I'll probably be at a park somewhere in the middle of the night. It'll probably be some little recreational park with a broken-down swing, swinging wondering what pick I got.

"I'll have my phone off. My agent will hunt me down somewhere, with the police probably, because I'll be gone."

When John Hamilton, Davis' agent heard that story, he let out a hearty laugh. He knows his client loves a good joke.

"No," Hamilton said. "We'll be in Baton Rouge that night with his mentor and former AAU coach Collis Temple, the first African-American to play basketball at LSU."

"We'll be over there on Thursday night."

Good, we wouldn't want a first-rounder sitting in the dark about the night that will change his life. As for Hamilton, he'll be proud of Davis whatever happens on Thursday night.

"I'm proud of him," Hamilton said. "He has to endure a lot over the last year or so from first trying to decide whether or not he should stay in school, then going through a difficult season, then to have all of the questions stemming from, 'Why now, why not last year or why not wait another year?' "I'm extremely proud of the way he's handled all of that. It hasn't been easy for him."

Another thing that hasn't been easy has been auditioning. Davis has kept a grueling schedule of workouts for teams the past two weeks. His travels have taken him across country and from coast-to-coast. But the journey is almost over as the workouts come to a close and Draft night approaches. Where will Big Baby go? We don't know, but he knows where he's come from.

Q: What are you working for right now?
Davis
: "Right now, I'm working to be the best player I can be. If I do that, everything else will fall into place. You know, take it one day at a time, work hard and get better every day."

Q: What makes you think you're more ready to be in the NBA this year than last?
Davis
: "Because of the mental approach I had to take this year, because this year we lost a lot."

Q: Do you think losing at LSU hurt your stock a bit this year?
Davis
: "I think it hurt my stock a bit because we didn't win, but as a player I got better."

Q: How did you feel get better?
Davis
: Physically, I got my body right over the season. I think I got more stuff on the perimeter because of the different point guard we had this season. Adjusting, helped me.

Q: How did you choose between football and basketball in high school? And when did you think you could make it to the NBA?
Davis
: It's my love of the game of basketball and when I started competing on the collegiate level, that's when I thought my chances of making the NBA got better and better, and my confidence rose, and I felt that I could play there.

Q: What would it mean to you and your family for you to be selected in the first round?
Davis
: It would mean a lot to be one of the top players in the world. It makes you feel good. As for my family, they'd really appreciate it. It would be something really good and positive that happened to the family. They would love it, I couldn't even express how they would feel.

Q: How is this process been leading up to the draft? Was it what you expected?
Davis
: It's been totally different than how I thought it would be. You don't know nothin', you don't know what's going on. It's a horror movie, mixed with drama, so many emotions going on right now. You need to keep a level mind. You have to stay focused.

Q: How do you do that?
Davis
: Pray about it. That's all I can do. Keep yourself busy and occupied, that's what I do. I just play Xbox all day. He comes into the room and asks, 'What did you think?' Or this went down, or that's all good and dandy. You gotta let everything roll off your back, even if it's good information.

Q: How would it feel to hear your name called on Draft night?
Davis
: To hear my name called? Whooo. I can't even ... it would make my family extremely happy.

Q: What's the first thing do you think that would go through your mind when you're picked?
Davis
: First thing, I think about? When's summer league? Where's the team playing? I want to play. I want to win.

Q: Do you have one place or another that you'd like to go?
Davis
: I don't have a preference. I would like a different style of play. It doesn't matter, I don't want to be picky. Just let me in. I could help someone right away.

Q: And you wouldn't mind getting the veterans bags and the doughnuts and all the other rookie duties?
Davis
: Not at all, not at all. I would go get 'em, make 'em whatever they want me to do.
