Career Highlights: Coming out of Miami Christian Academy, was ranked the 31st-best prospect in the country by Insiders.com. Garnered All-Big East Team Freshman First Team honors in 2003-04. Led Miami in scoring as a sophomore and a junior. An All-ACC Second Team selection in both of those seasons.
Junior (2005-06): While playing in and starting all 34 games, Diaz connected on a career-high 194 field goals, including a career-high 78 three-pointers, en route to averaging 17.2 points. Scored a season-high 29 points in a win over Virginia Tech. Tallied 21 points, nine assists, five rebounds and three steals in a win over Maryland. Named to the All-ACC Second Team.
Sophomore (2004-05): A second-team All-ACC selection, Diaz started all 29 games and led the Hurricanes with 18.6 ppg. Led the team in scoring 15 times and recorded 27-consecutive games of double-figure scoring. Averaged 20.7 points in ACC games, second-best in the Conference. Tallied 21 points, six rebounds and five assists in the first round of the NIT Tournament against South Carolina.
Freshman (2003-04): Played in all 30 games, starting 18 times. Shot 25-for-49 (.510) from three-point range and 30-for-37 from the foul line (.811) in Big East play. A 2003-04 All Big East Freshman Team selection. Registered 17 points, two rebounds, two assists and five steals against North Carolina
Strengths: A fiery competitor and an incredible athlete measured to have a 41’’ vertical while at Miami, Diaz can change the game in a variety of ways. His quickness and overall athleticism make him difficult to stop when he is attacking the rim for one of his electrifying dunks, and his potent three-point stroke forces defenders to play him honestly even on the perimeter.
Personal: Guillermo, nicknamed “Superman,” is the son of Luis Manuel Diaz and Ethel Gonzalez. A volleyball standout before switching to basketball during his senior year of high school, Diaz captured MVP and Best Server honors at the 2003 Under-18 World Volleyball Championship in Thailand.
