NBA Draft 2001: Wednesday, June 27
Brendan Haywood

Brendan Haywood
20th pick, Cleveland Cavaliers;
Haywood's rights were traded to the Orlando Magic for center Michael Doleac

Q: How do you feel?

Haywood: Orlando was my favorite team coming into the draft. I was ecstatic when I heard I was traded to Orlando. I was happy to be picked by Cleveland, I was glad they picked me, but being traded to Orlando is great. They have a great team coming back. They really need some four and five help.

Q: How long have you liked the Magic?

Haywood: I've liked the Magic for a long time. Everybody asked me where did I think I would be picked. A lot of people said Seattle, but I felt Orlando was the best fit for me. I like Doc Rivers, I like John Gabriel.

Q: Are you surprised?

Haywood: I'm not surprised. I heard some rumors I might be traded. I didn't know where I was going to be, but I had a feeling I wasn't going to stay in Cleveland.

Q: How do you feel about playing for Doc Rivers?

Haywood: He's a player's coach. He's played in the NBA. He knows what it takes. Anything he says, he's not saying it to hurt your feelings, he's saying it because it's the truth.

QUOTES FROM BEFORE THE TRADE

Q: What do you make of the possible trade talk?

Haywood: I can't tell you what's going to happen, but I'm here now and that's all I care about. If I get traded to another team, that's fine with me. I'll go in and work just as hard and play basketball. That's all I can do.

Q: Are you excited?

Haywood: I'm very excited. I'm excited to be a Cleveland Cavalier. I'm just happy to be in the NBA. It's a dream, being a top 20 pick isn't that bad.

Q: How do you fit in Cleveland?

Haywood: Cleveland is obviously a place where I can get some minutes. They picked a young guy, DeSagana Diop. They've also talked about moving Chris Mihm to the four. This could be a very good fit for me.

Q: Are you surprised you slipped a little bit?

Haywood: It was surprising. Some of the guys that went before me, I was surprised, but it's not where you start, it's where you finish. I'll remember this for the rest of my life.

Q: Did you work out for Cleveland?

Haywood: No, I didn't work out for Cleveland. Instead I took another Detroit workout. Detroit wanted to work me out again, because they were looking for guys at the three or five. Because of the way the draft went, there were a lot of threes available, so I wasn't there for Detroit, but Cleveland was there for me.
