Eddie Griffin

Eddie Griffin
No. 7 pick, New Jersey Nets;
Griffin's rights were traded to Houston for the rights to No. 13 pick Richard Jefferson, No. 18 pick Jason Collins and No. 23 pick Brandon Armstrong

Q: How did you feel when the trade was announced?

Griffin: Actually, I like the trade. I'm looking forward to going to Houston and playing with Cuttino Mobley and Steve Francis. So, I'm real excited about it.

Q: Would you like to play with Hakeem?

Griffin: Yeah, I'd like to play with Hakeem. He's a guy I could learn a lot from. He's won championships, so he's a guy I could learn a lot from.

Q: Does this trade make you realize it's a business?

Griffin: Most definitely, it is. That was just a wakeup call to let me know. I'm glad I got it early.

Q: Do you think the fit wasn't right with Jersey?

Griffin: I'm not really sure. But, I know I'm going to go in and fit with Houston, and hopefully I can do that.

Q: What was your reaction to the trade?

Griffin: I was just surprised because I was looking forward to going and playing for the Nets, but now I'm in a better situation. Houston is on the verge of being a great team. I'm in a better situation.

Q: Do you think the Nets made a mistake?

Griffin: I wouldn't say they made a mistake because they didn't know the type of player they would have been getting. Hopefully, I can go to Houston and prove to everybody what type of player I am.

Q: How surprised were you?

Griffin: Real surprised because I was doing interviews and they pulled me out and told me. I was just very surprised about it.

Q: How do you feel about staying in Jersey?

Griffin: I feel real good about staying in Jersey. I played my college ball up here. I like the Jersey area and I'm already familiar with the arena, so I'm going to love it. It's going to be great.

Q: Did New Jersey picking you surprise you?

Griffin: Yeah, it kind of threw me off a little bit, but I'm still happy that I got drafted in the top 10. I'm looking forward to going to the Nets, and I'm just going to work hard.

Q: Take us through your day.

Griffin: I woke up with my friend videotaping me. He just videotaped me most of the day. We had a couple of meetings about the draft. After that I had a couple of hours to myself, and I was just so anxious and nervous. It's here now and I can take a deep breath, kick back and relax.

Q: Where did you think you would fall?

Griffin: I thought I was going to fall between three and five. That's what my agent was telling me, but I'm still happy with me being drafted seventh, because my lifelong dream was to be drafted and this is the day. I'm just happy about it.

Q: Is there any added pressure playing in Jersey?

Griffin: No, it's no pressure. I'm just going to go there and play my usual game, just work hard.

Q: There was talk that Golden State would select you. How did you feel when Jason's named was called?

Griffin: My heart just dropped because I thought that was me. I was looking forward to going out there, but I didn't look past the fifth pick to even think about Jersey. But I guess I must belong in New Jersey because I can't get away.
