NBA Draft 2001: Wednesday, June 27
Kwame Brown

Brown
No. 1 pick, Washington Wizards

Brown opening statement: It feels good to be here. I guess I just made history. It feels great. I've never been so nervous and just so overwhelmed in my life. This is a great opportunity for me to just bless my family and just touch so many lives. Coming out of a small town, Brunswick, Ga., not many minorities make it, and I'm one of them, so hopefully I'll just lift everyone up.

Q: Did you have the feeling that you were going to be the one for Washington?

Brown: No, I've heard from wise people that this is a very risky business, and you don't invest in one team, so for me, I just had to wait until this was a done deal. Now that it's a done deal, I'm very pleased with the way I worked out, and I'm just happy with the whole situation.

Q: What's going to be the biggest adjustment for you?

Brown: The physical nature of the game, and just how many games they play. But the most I'm concerned about is the mental part.

Q: Will your mother join you in Washington?

Brown: That's a possibility. She's very much into her church. If she decides to come, I'll receive her with open arms.

Q: Is there a possibility you'll live there on your own?

Brown: I won't go to Washington by myself. Either her or my mentor, John Williams, will go. He's the pastor of my church, so one of the two will come with me. I'm not going to be left out there on my own.

Q: Did Michael Jordan say anything to you about drafting you?

Brown: He didn't. Like I said, this business is very -- you never know what's going to happen. You just have to wait and see what happens, and after it happens, you just go to wherever you actually go.

Q: Are you surprised by this?

Brown: It was a surprise for me because I've heard it all week, but you know, that's just people talking. I've heard a lot of stuff before that didn't come true.

Q: Would you like to play with Michael Jordan?

Brown: I would love to see him come back. That would be great to play alongside Michael. I'd be like a sponge, just soaking up as much as I can. I feel like I'm obligated to represent for high school students, and prove a lot of the critics wrong. So hopefully they'll see that he didn't make the wrong decision.
