DRAFT TRADE: Pistons acquire 38th overall pick Khyri Thomas in trade with Philadelphia 76ers for two future second-round picks
Areas Of Strength
Andre Drummond is a presence at the rim and a rebounding machine. Blake Griffin brings star power and a game that has grown out to the perimeter. Reggie Jackson attacks with ice water in his veins and helped the Detroit Pistons go 27-18 when he was healthy enough to play. There are some legit role players in search of a system, which will have to wait until the coaching vacancy is filled. The team’s 3-point accuracy was good and rookie Luke Kennard, despite not being Donovan Mitchell, was a solid choice at No. 12 last year.
“Needs to hire” is more like it. The Pistons brought in Ed Stefanski as senior advisor to owner Tom Gores, a wise move. But the wheels weren’t turning quickly, with Detroit in need of both a GM and coach in the wake of Stan Van Gundy’s two-fer firing. Griffin’s contract is cap crushing now and into the future, and with Jackson’s fragility and Langston Galloway’s and Ish Smith’s limitations, help is needed at point guard. Stanley Johnson remains a disappointment for his lack of improvement since arriving.
Two Stats That Matter
37.3 percent -- The Pistons were the most improved 3-point shooting team in the league, shooting 37.3 percent from beyond the arc (fifth best), up from 33.0 percent (28th) in 2016-17.
67 -- Reggie Jackson has missed 67 games over the last two seasons.
