Pre-Draft Analysis

Areas of Strength
Los Angeles is a world-class city with a wonderful climate. Ummmm. Magic Johnson can get good Dodgers tickets. Management is dedicated to winning and will spend to extremes to reclaim the championship tradition. There is that. And the Lakers are a good place to be for a player who wants to market himself.

Needs Work
With so much of last season’s roster about to become free agents a large part of the returnees dealing with injuries issues, it’s impossible to know what the Lakers will be. No coach also means no known system. In general, though, they basically need a starter and/or backup at most every position.

Two Stats That Matter
7 -- The Lakers’ highest draft spot since 1982, when they took James Worthy at No. 1.

3 -- The number, by the start of 2014-15, of permanent head coaches the Lakers will have had in three seasons.

The Way To Go
NBA.com's Draft expert, Scott Howard-Cooper, offers up his suggestions:
Aaron Gordon and Noah Vonleh, one-and-done forwards with a reasonable chance to be on the board at No. 7, would both make sense, Indiana’s Vonleh for his expanding offensive game and Arizona’s Gordon for his defense. If Julius Randle somehow slips, a longshot, the Lakers would have a steal. They could also look at Marcus Smart for a point guard.
