Pre-Draft Analysis

Areas of strength

Maybe he’ll be 36 as he steps onto the court for next season’s opener, but Dirk Nowitzki showed that he can still play at an elite level. Monta Ellis and Jose Calderon were below-the-radar free agent assets and the venerable pair of Shawn Marion and Vince Carter can still get after it if the Mavs want to step up to the plate in free agency.

Needs work

Except for that grand and glorious 2010-11 season when the Mavs had Tyson Chandler as the defensive stopper in the middle, this has perennially been a franchise in search of a top-flight center.  Nothing’s changed and the Mavs need an upgrade over Samuel Dalembert and DeJuan Blair to move up in the West pecking order.

Two stats that matter

40 -- The way he takes care of his body and works during the offseason to stay in shape, Nowitzki could still be putting up — and making — that unstoppable jumper when he starts his fifth decade.  That’s time for the Mavs to reload.

26 -- Size still matters in the NBA and having lost out last summer in the free agent sweepstakes for Dwight Howard, the Mavs need a big body to clean the glass and get them out of a bottom-five ranking in rebounds.

The way to go
NBA.com's Draft expert, Scott Howard-Cooper, offers up his suggestions:
The Mavs will have plenty of room under the salary cap and Mark Cuban is always looking to be aggressive. The trouble has been getting turned down so much of late.  Dallas needs a big man who can throw his weight around down low and gobble up rebounds and that’s why restricted free agent Greg Monroe immediately comes to mind.  The trick for the Mavs is to make it such a lucrative free agent offer that the Pistons won’t match. This is a perfect for both sides.
