Pre-Draft Analysis

Areas of Strength

Talent and experience. The Nets will be a year older, don’t have the flexibility to add much talent, and have a lot of questions regarding their rotation. But as long as they bring most of their core back, they’ll be one of the best teams in the Eastern Conference. Nets coach Jason Kidd has a year of experience and his team has an identity on both ends of the floor, so they shouldn’t have to worry about another brutal (10-21) start.

Needs Work

Assets and flexibility. Not only are the Nets without a pick this year, but they’ve traded their 2016 and 2018 first rounders and have given teams (Atlanta and Boston) the right to swap picks in 2015 and 2017. They won’t have cap space until 2016 and have only the tax-payer’s mid-level exception and minimum deals to sign new players in the next two summers.

Two Stats That Matter

0.667 -- The Nets’ winning percentage (34-17) after Jan. 1, second best in the East.

108.3 -- Points per 100 possessions that the Nets scored with Deron Williams on the floor vs. 100.0 with him on the bench. The point guard did not have a good year by his standards, but his team was at its best offensively when he was running the show.

The Way To Go
NBA.com's Draft expert, Scott Howard-Cooper, offers up his suggestions:

After the success of 2013 draft pick Mason Plumlee going from the 22nd pick to first-team All-Rookie, the Nets won’t get any help this time unless they make a trade or buy a pick. If they do jump in, finding someone who can hit a shot would be a good direction.
