Prospect Analysis

Strengths:

  • Strong shooting and scoring ability
  • Good production in top European levels
  • Moves well off the ball
  • Improved his passing skills

Weaknesses:

  • Needs to get stronger
  • Defense is not his strong suit
  • Athleticism not up to NBA standards
  • Can depend on jumper too much
  • Can be overly emotional

NBA Projection:

A wing who is not terribly athletic will have problems defending in the NBA. His offensive skill set may help get him drafted in the late 2nd round.

2013-2014 Season:

Gentile is one of the few Europeans to have a solid year playing at a top competition level averaging double figures both in Euroleague competition as well as in the top Italian league.. He was solid representing Italy at the European Championships in Slovenia where he averaged  14.2 points in 11 games.

10.9 ppg, 3.5 rpg, 3.0 apg, 0.8 spg, 24.1 mpg, .503 2PT, .365 3PT, .769 FT (Italy)

What Insiders say:

Luka Bassin, Assistant Coach, Union Olimpija (Slovenia)

" He played a lot and had big role in one of the top european teams from Milano. An offensive orientated player who looks to score first. He is pure shooter who can shoot from isolation, from off ball screens and from pick/roll. Great shooting touch from behind the arc. He also added floaters in his repertoire and can successfully play back to basket and dish some nice assists. However he should work on his body and physicality in order to be successful on defense too. "

Robert White, Prospect Next.com

“Gentile’s stock improved when he led a surprising Italy in scoring at last year’s Eurobasket, but concerns his game won’t translate well in the NBA may see him slip out of the second round altogether. Despite a strong body and some clear scoring skills, Gentile has a slow and deliberate style of attack, lacks explosion and has the tendency to fall in love with his inconsistent jumper."

Kris Habbas, NBA Draft Insider

"Gentile is one of the more “ready” prospects to step in as a rookie and play in the NBA today. He is a 22 year old scoring guard with very good size and a nice shooting stroke. Off the ball, Gentile moves well and gets into scoring position well in the mi-range and from three-point range as well. Not a lot of upside with Gentile as you know what you are going to get and fills a role on a team as a shooter and scorer."
