Areas of Strength
Defense, defense, defense. The Grizzlies are all about getting down in the mud and up in your face and challenging you to put the ball into the basket. With Defensive Player of the Year Marc Gasol acting as the traffic cop in the middle, coach Lionel Hollins' team never makes things easy for opponents and usually finds a way to grind them down. To that end, perimeter lock down defender Tony Allen -- who dubbed the FedEx Forum "the Grindhouse" -- is a free agent priority for the summer.

Needs Work
It is a very rare team indeed that could trade away its top scorer at midseason and then find a way to advance to the conference finals for the first time in franchise history. When the Grizzlies shipped Rudy Gay to Toronto, it forced Gasol, Zach Randolph and especially point guard Mike Conley to take more ownership of the offense and they did. But the WCF series against the Spurs showed that Memphis needs a wing man who can create his own shot and they're still searching for a consistent 3-point threat.

Two Stats That Matter
30 -- That's where the Grizzlies ranked, dead last, in the league in the increasingly important areas of 3-pointers tried and made.

17 -- The old adage that "defense wins championships" only partially applies in today's game. You've got to be able to scorer and that means getting out of fat middle of the league in offensive production.

The Way To Go
Ownership and new management clearly sent word that they won't simply blow a hole in the budget to pursue a championship and that means no more wild and crazy contracts like the one that greased the skids for Gay out of town. The Grizzlies don't have a pick in the first round of the draft. But with a pair (Nos. 41 and 55) in the second round, they need to focus on a wing scorer who can spread the floor and loosen things up on the inside for Z-Bo and Gasol.
