Areas of Strength:
After 14 seasons, the 2011 NBA Finals MVP Dirk Nowitzki is still the potent offensive force that carried the Mavs to the championship two seasons ago and should be able to big lure big name free agent help to Dallas to make another run at a second title. Team owner Mark Cuban spares no expense to add pieces and president/GM Donnie Nelson knows how to find them.

Needs Work:
When the Mavs let Tyson Chandler shuffle off to New York following the championship season, it re-opened the gaping hole in the middle of the lineup that had the Mavs often compared to a donut for decades. First, they need a shot-blocking presence to protect the rim and also a rebounder to clean the glass. They'll need a scorer off the bench if free agent Jason Terry leaves and it's time to start developing the young point guard to replace Jason Kidd.

Two Stats That Matter:
20
-- Last season's ranking for the Dallas offense that experienced serious slippage and often struggled in the clutch.

40 -- Jason Kidd's age when the 2013 playoffs begin. It's time to find younger legs.

The Way To Go:
Much of the off-season focus will be on the Mavs' attempts to land the big free agent prizes of center Dwight Howard and/or point guard Deron Williams. Either one in a lineup with a fit and healthy Dirk Nowitzki puts the Mavs right back into contention. With the No. 17 pick in the draft, it's time to find a shooter from the wing who can fill that instant-offense role of Jason Terry off the bench.
