Phoenix Suns Team Overview

2010-11 record: 40-42

Second place, Pacific Division

Did not make the playoffs

Round: 1

Areas of Strength:
The Suns remain a dangerous offensive team even after losing Amar'e Stoudemire and dealing with near-constant lineup upheaval, a testament to Steve Nash and Grant Hill and the system of coach Alvin Gentry. In this way, there is something to be said for not changing.

Needs Work:
The Suns were a better defensive team than most realized, in contrast to their run-and-gun reputation, as recently as two seasons ago in the move to the Western Conference finals. That important element disappeared so fast and so convincingly in 2010-11 that even they were confused at the cause. Either way, the reality is that Phoenix needs defense and rebounding.

Two Stats That Matter:
-- Steve Nash refuses to act his age, averaging 14.7 points and 11.4 assists while shooting 49.2 percent overall and 39.5 from behind the arc at a time most have long since retired.

4 -- Number of members of the rotation who either will be or could be free agents in the summer, signaling the possibility of more roster turnover.

The Way To Go:
The Suns will have a choice of several power forwards late in the lottery. This is a good thing. Even if the 13th pick is never projected to become a star, especially in this weak Draft class, Phoenix can realistically expect to address a position of obvious need. Finding someone who rebounds and stops the ball inside would be an important step to the future with Nash and Hill down to the final eight or 10 years of their careers.
