Prospect Profile

Diante Garrett

  • Full Name: Diante Garrett
  • Position: Forward
  • Height/Weight: 6-5 1/2 / 190
  • Birthdate: November 3, 1988
  • College: Iowa State

Strengths:

  * Good size for his position
  * Has blow-by speed and quickness
  * Good passer

Weaknesses:

  * Jump shot needs more consistency
  * Could get to the free-throw line more often
  * Needs to continue improving on keeping quicker guards in front of him

NBA projection:
Garrett played well at the Portsmouth Invitational, where he was measured at 6-5 ½, an inch-and-a-half taller than he was listed at Iowa State. Given his size and playmaking ability, he's got a chance as that rare second-round pick who can make an NBA roster.

2010-11 Season:
Garrett earned second-team All-Big 12 honors after leading the league in assists and minutes played. Garrett handed out 195 assists, the fourth-best single-season total in Iowa history. Garrett led Iowa State in scoring, assists, steals, minutes played and free-throw percentage.

Key statistics:
17.3 ppg, 3.7 rpg, 6.1 apg, 3.3 tpg, 1.8 bpg, 36.7 mpg, .413 FG, .319 3PT, .825 FT

Cool statistic:
Last season, only two players in the country averaged at least 17 points and at least six assists. Nate Wolters (19.5 ppg, 6.1 apg) of South Dakota State was one, and Garrett was the other.

Antonio Daniels

What Insiders Say:
Iowa State assistant coach T.J. Otzelberger
"Diante at his size he is so quick with the basketball north and south. Or so fast. He's able to go from standing still and just exploding by guys. He's got such great speed. He keeps the ball on the string. Even though he plays a bit upright, his handle is really tight and close to his body. He's able to get by his guy whenever he wants to and get shots for other guys."

What Outsiders Say:
NBA director of scouting Ryan Blake
"He was impressive [at the Portsmouth Invitational]. Diante knows how to play on both ends of the floor and makes everybody better. He's got good speed, handles it well and makes the correct pass. I think he's going to have several opportunities to make a splash."

Chris Dortch is the editor of the Blue Ribbon College Basketball Yearbook.
