Texas Legends Teachers of the Year Award

Greenhill School teachers win Teacher of the Year Honors

Frisco, TX April 9TH, 2012 – The 2012 Texas Legends Teachers of the Year Award was awarded to David Lowen and Andy Mercurio during a pregame ceremony during the regular season finale on April 7th. Both are outstanding teachers at the Greenhill School and have dedicated over 29 years of service to the school combined.

David Lowen, a graduate of Garland High School, went on to receive a BA in Political Science, a MA in Science Education and a MA in Educational Administration. Lowen has 32 years of teaching experience, including the last 14 at the Greenhill School. He currently teaches Military Strategy, Sociology, Psychology, and Western History. Lowen is a five time recipient of the Who’s Who of Americas Teachers award and received the 1982 Rockwall ISD Teacher of the Year award. Daivd is an U.S. Army veteran, he served from 1971 – 1974, and has a son Jackson with his wife Elaine.

Andy Mercurio graduated magna cum laude from Bowdoin College with an AB in English and a minor in Education. He earned his Masters of Liberal Arts from SMU in December 2011. After moving to Dallas shortly after graduation for a one-year internship at Greenhill, Mercurio continued teaching at the school and has taught at Greenhill for the past 15 years. He has taught Humanities, eighth grade Composition, Upper School English and has served as an advisor since 2005. Mercurio was selected by the Greenhill faculty and administration as Faculty Leader for the 2011-2012 school year. Andy has coached eighth grade, JV, and varsity baseball, served as a sponsor for the school newspaper, and is currently sponsors four Upper School Clubs. Andy and his wife Tina have been married for 11 years and have two children – Aidan (5 years) and Giuliana (2 months).
