Texas Legends assistant coach Scott Flemming can now add “international head coach” to his list of accomplishments. Flemming has been named the head coach of India’s men’s national team.
“I had been looking for another head coaching position, another opportunity to not only do what I love to do but to make a difference, when this was presented to me,” Flemming said. “The more I looked into it, the more interested I became.” Though India has only qualified for the Olympics once — the U.S.-boycotted 1980 games in Moscow — the team has long been considered one of the strongest in South Asia, winning a silver medal at the 2010 South Asian Games, and gold medals at the 1995, 1999 and 2004 editions.
“It’s really a chance to develop basketball at a grassroots level, and their national program over there is very committed to getting better,” Flemming said. “With my background and with what I’ve done, it’s a good fit.” India will compete in the FIBA Asia Cup in mid-September.
