Jerry Smith ● 6 feet, 2 inches ● 190 pounds ● Guard
Jerry Smith is precisely the type of player that can benefit greatly from Summer League. After a solid showing in the NBA D-League his first year out of Louisville in 2010-11, the 6-foot-2 guard took a quantum leap in year two. Last season with the Springfield Armor, Smith averaged 19.1 points, 4.9 rebounds and 3.8 assists over the course of 39 games. Smith parlayed that solid season into his first-ever GATORADE Call-Up when he played nine games for the New Jersey Nets. In that stint he got decent looks – he averaged 9.2 minutes per game – and he averaged 1.4 points and 1.4 rebounds.

Smith, a converted point guard, as are so many in the NBA D-League, has shown improved ability to run an offense the past two seasons. If he can run the show for the Select Team, he will likely open some eyes. In fact, Smith says that his main goal for his time in Las Vegas is to show NBA scouts that he is capable of being a true NBA point guard.

After a strong four-year career at Louisville, Smith went undrafted in the 2010 NBA Draft. In his time playing professionally, however, he has shown off a scoring prowess that wasn’t always evident in college. He is a native of Wisconsin.

His Ceiling

Smith without a doubt has NBA potential. He projects more as a role player, but he could be one of the first guys off the bench for a solid team.

What He Needs from Summer League

Smith needs to show his continued overall improvement as well as his ability to successfully run the point. His career outlook is on an upswing and a solid showing in Vegas will only help that.

Quote

"Jerry is a great defender, he can shoot the ball, he’s a guy that can score from the point position, but we look at him like he is a point guard now. He had gotten two years under his belt now being in Springfield and he is a point guard right now." - Select Team Head Coach Eric Musselman
