Thunderbirds Hold Off Armor

Rio Rancho, NM The New Mexico Thunderbirds (10-6) ran their home winning streak to six straight games when they defeated the Springfield Armor (4-12) by a score of 111-105 on Tuesday night.

Jamine Peterson led the way for the Thunderbirds with 28 points and 11 rebounds off the bench. Dar Tucker also added 28 points off the bench.

Chas McFarland helped Springfield get off to fast start, scoring eight of the first 14 points of the game for the Armor and they led 14-8 early on. The Thunderbirds scored five of the last seven points of the quarter and closed to within two points at the end of one quarter.

With the score tied early on, the Armor went on a 9-0 run to take a 32-23 lead. The Thunderbirds answered with a 10-1 run to take their first lead of the game. They would hold a 50-48 lead at the half. Peterson led all scorers with 14 points off the bench in the first half.

In the third quarter, the Thunderbirds opened up their largest lead of the game when they went on an 11-2 run to make the score 63-54. Shane Edwards score seven of the Thunderbirds 11 points during the run. The T-Birds would lead 80-74 heading into the fourth quarter.

The Armor got within four points in the fourth quarter, but the Thunderbirds then went on a 13-4 run to take a 13 point lead. Springfield went on a late run to get within two points with 55 seconds remaining in fourth quarter, but the Thunderbirds hit four straight free throws down the stretch to hold off the Armor.

The Thunderbirds and Armor will play again tomorrow night at 7:30 p.m. at the Santa Ana Star Center.
