In addition to the pre-game activities, non-stop entertainment and face painting was provided by the by the Shriners Clowns of Springfield. Fans of all ages waved balloon swords, foam fingers, and cheered along with Steal, the Armor mascot.
Addressing the crowd before tip-off was the Mayor of Springfield, Domenic Sarno, Executive Director of the Massachusetts Convention Center Authority, Jim Rooney, NBA Development League President, Dan Reed, and Springfield Armor General Manager, Alex Schwerin.
The Springfield Armor opened their season against the Iowa Energy this past Friday November 27, 2009. Iowa took an early lead in the first quarter with Energy’s Guard, Curtis Stinson, leading the way with 9 points. Iowa’s lead continued to grow despite the comeback effort of the Armor to bring the score within 5. Tre Whitted put up a quick 10 points to go along with Perrin Johnson’s 12 and Craig Austrie’s 13. However by the end of third quarter the Energy lead 80-56 and they continued to dominate on the three point line. The final score was 73-106 in favor of the Energy.
Final Attendance for the night was 3,940.
The following night was the conclusion of the Springfield Armor’s Opening Weekend. Things started off a little easier for the Armor as they went head to head against the Iowa Energy in the second game. At the end of the first quarter the armor lead 27-20. Maurice Maxwell put up 10 points and JamesOn Curry made 2 of 3 from the 3 point line.
In the second quarter Iowa began to make a comeback. The Armor kept up despite the benched speed of Julian Allen but the team would be out scored by Iowa 21-16 and followed it by a devastating 34 additional points in the third. Maxwell continued to succeed for the Armor, however found himself in foul trouble early in the 3rd. The Iowa lead grew to as much as 14 points.
The final quarter the Armor moved the score to within 8 but the Energy held on to take their second win of the season. Maxwell topped the Armor point’s leader board with 21 points followed by Adam Harrington with 14. Iowa’s top scorers were Curtis Stinson with 19 and Mark Tyndale with 14. In the end, the Armor fell once again to the Iowa Energy with a score of 96-84. Game attendance for Saturday’s game was 2,108, giving them a combined 6,048 fans for the weekend.
The Armor will take on the Maine Red Claws Friday December 4 at 8:00 p.m. in the Portland Exposition and then again on December 5 at the MassMutual Center for "Crush the Claws Knight!" Purchase your tickets today!
