Michael Savit-Managing Partner of the HWS Group and Springfield Armor Team Owner
With unique insight into sports marketing gained both from his tenure as a Senior Vice President at the Cleveland-based International Management Group (IMG) and his ownership experiences in Minor League Baseball, Michael brings impressive credentials to the NBA Development League’s franchise in Springfield, MA.
Beginning in 1981, Michael specialized in event management at IMG for over 16 years. After leaving the company in 1997, Michael and his brother, Jeffery – a fiduciary attorney – founded HWS Group, which is headquartered in Wellesley, MA. Named in honor of their late father Herbert W. Savit, HWS group was created to combine the marketing experience Michael gained as Senior Vice President at IMG with the community knowledge and baseball expertise of existing franchises in Minor League baseball.
The HWS Group began its professional baseball ownership venture with the purchase of the Augusta GreenJackets of the South Atlantic League in 1998. The company purchased the Michigan Battlecats of the Midwest League in 2000 and since has added the Mobile BayBears of the Southern League, the Modesto Nuts of the California League, and the Mahoning Valley Scrappers of the New York-Penn League. The HWS Group also owns the Columbia Blowfish of the Coastal Plain League, a summer collegiate baseball circuit.
Michael was contacted soon after the NBA D-League revealed plans to branch into New England, and the HWS Group was extended to include professional basketball in 2009.
In addition to its work in professional sports, the HWS Group manages an annual charity golf tournament - the HWS Golf Classic – in North Kingston, RI and is involved in various philanthropic endeavors in the Boston area.
A 1978 graduate of Harvard College, Michael resides in Newton, MA with his wife Jill. He has three children – Lauren (26), Matthew (23) and Hilary (18) – as well as two stepchildren – Alexander (19) and Moriah (14).
