SPRINGFIELD, MA- The Springfield Armor (17-13) staved off a frantic fourth quarter rally to hold off the Texas Legends (13-18) 109-103 before 2,982 fans inside the MassMutual Center tonight. The win is the Armorís fourth straight, tying their longest winning streak of the season.
The Armor led wire-to-wire tonight for the third time in their last four games, but the Legends proved to be a tough out down the stretch. Springfield entered the fourth quarter with a 17-point advantage, but Texas quickly began whittling away at the deficit. The Legends opened the quarter by outscoring the Armor 23-6 to tie the game at 96-96 with 4:27 to go. The Armor regained the lead after a Jeff Foote free throw and moments later, JamesOn Curry hit Foote with a beautiful pass that he dunked to push the lead to 99-96. After a Curry basket extended the lead to 101-96, the Legendsí Anthony Vereen made it a one possession game with a layup. However, the Armor went to Curry and he delivered with five straight points to give the team a 104-98 lead. The Legends battled back to trim the deficit to four, but a Dennis Horner three-pointer with 8.4 seconds remaining was the dagger that sealed the victory.
Jerry Smith led all scorers tonight with 28 points, 18 of which came before halftime. Curry added 18 points(15 in the second half), 5 assists and 4 steals, Horner recorded his second straight double-double with 17 points and 10 rebounds, Lance Hurdle chipped in 15 points off the bench and Foote contributed 12 points and 6 rebounds.
The Legends got a team-high 26 points from Alando Tucker, Sean Williams added 19 points and 7 rebounds and Vereen scored 10 points and grabbed 9 rebounds on the evening.
The Armor outrebounded Texas 43-35 in their final matchup at the MassMutual Center this season. The two teams will meet once more this season in the Armorís regular season finale on April 7th in Texas.
The Armor hit the road tomorrow morning for a game in Fort Wayne against the Mad Ants at 6:00 PM tomorrow night. The Armor return home for a pair of games against the Eastern Conference-leading Iowa Energy on Thursday and Friday at the MassMutual Center. Both games are scheduled to tip off at 7:00 PM.
