Armor Fall to Erie

SPRINGFIELD, MA Jan. 2, 2010 – The Erie BayHawks struggled early, but bounced back for a convincing 102-89 victory over the Springfield Armor Sunday afternoon at the MassMutual Center in Springfield.

The Armor roared out of the gates with hot shooting from JamesOn Curry and Jerry Smith and took a quick 11-0 lead. Curry had 11 points early. The Armor held a lead of 14 at one point, but the Erie bench provided a lift.

Blake Ahearn scored 12 points, Tasmin Mitchell added 9 and Garrett Temple chipped in 4 while pulling down 5 rebounds off the BayHawks’ bench in the first half. The bench provided a boost for Erie as they outscored the Armor 32-17 in the second quarter to take a 50-42 lead going into halftime. “The main thing for us was playing our game,” Ahearn said.

From that point on, it was all BayHawks. Erie extended its lead to 16 in the third quarter and even when the Armor pulled off a 10-4 run that cut the lead to 8 going into the fourth, the BayHawks responded. “It was all about sustaining them,” said Ahearn. Each time the Armor tried to cut the lead, Erie answered with a key bucket.

Like Friday night’s win over the Armor, the BayHawks displayed great scoring balance with 7 players scoring in double figures. The BayHawks were led by Ivan Johnson, who scored 18 of his 19 points in the second half. Kyle Spain had 18 points, while Ahearn added 16.

The Armor were led by Curry with 23 points and L.D. Williams with 21.

Erie improves 11-6 after sweeping the weekend series against Springfield. The Armor fall to 4-11 and are losers of their last 4. These two teams meet back in Springfield Friday, January, 15th.

The BayHawks host the Sioux Falls SkyForce this Friday at home. The Armor hit the road and will play the New Mexico Thunderbirds Tuesday night.
