Santa Cruz Warriors Defeat Reno Bighorns in First Preseason Contest

The Santa Cruz Warriors opened the 2013-14 preseason with a 113-92 win over the Reno Bighorns Thursday evening in a game where seven Warriors scored in double figures.

Seth Curry led the way for Santa Cruz with a game-high 28 points and five steals, while Cameron Jones scored 20 points and dished out a game-high eight assists. Dewayne Dedmon logged the only double-double of the night with 10 points and 12 boards. Reno received its biggest offensive contribution with 13 points in 20 minutes off the bench from guard Tajuan Porter.

Reno held as much as a ten point advantage in the first half, leading 49-39 with 2:43 remaining before halftime. The Warriors closed the half on a 14-6 run to cut the deficit to two at intermission. Santa Cruz took the lead 58-55 on a Curry three-pointer just 54 seconds into the third quarter and never looked back, leading by as many as 23 in the game’s waning seconds.

Santa Cruz shot 45.9% from the field and 41.9% from beyond the three-point arc, while Reno shot 44.0% from the field and 31.6% from three. The Warriors held the edge over the Bighorns in assists (23-15) and steals (12-4), while Reno won the rebound battle (45-40). The Warriors committed just 12 turnovers to Reno’s 22.

The Santa Cruz Warriors will be back in action on Sunday at 7:30 p.m. at Kaiser Permanente Arena, finishing out the preseason with a contest against the Bakersfield Jam. As part of NBA D-League Cares Week, all proceeds from the game will benefit the Tannery Arts Center’s Performing Arts Center in its last major fundraising push.
