Santa Cruz Warriors Acquire Rights to John Allen, William Buford, Paul Crosby, Ryan Evans, Dwayne Jones & Two Draft Picks in Multiple Transactions
The Santa Cruz Warriors have acquired the rights to guard John Allen and forward/center Dwayne Jones from the Texas Legends, guard William Buford from the Iowa Energy, forward Paul Crosby from the Maine Red Claws and forward Ryan Evans from the Erie BayHawks, the team announced today. The Warriors have also received Erie’s original first round pick and Maine’s original second round pick in the 2014 NBA D-League Draft.
In exchange, Santa Cruz has sent the rights to Jeremy Tyler, Scott Suggs and Shane Gibson to the Erie BayHawks. Suggs and Gibson were both selected by the Santa Cruz Warriors in the 2013 NBA D-League Draft – Suggs was the 15th overall pick, while Gibson was selected in the third round (38th overall). In addition, the Warriors sent the rights to Jeremy Atkinson, who was selected in the third round (49th overall), to Texas.
The Warriors also received the rights to Reginald Buckner, the eighth overall pick in Friday’s NBA D-League Draft, from the Erie BayHawks and sent his rights to Iowa along with the rights to Garland Judkins, who was selected by Santa Cruz in the sixth round (100th overall). The Warriors received the rights to Abdul Gaddy, the 27th overall pick in this year’s draft, from Iowa and sent his rights to Maine in the trade for Paul Crosby. Santa Cruz sent its original third round selection in the 2014 NBA D-League Draft to the Springfield Armor in the three-team trade with Texas.
Allen, 24, was drafted by the Texas Legends with the fifth pick of the fourth round (56th overall) in the 2013 NBA D-League Draft. Allen, a 6’1”, 190-pound guard, helped lead Western Washington to the NCAA Division II national championship in 2012 and the national semifinals in 2013. He finished with 1,480 career points, ranking seventh in school history.
Buford, 23, was drafted 11th overall by the Iowa Energy in the 2013 NBA D-League Draft. The 6’5”, 215-pound guard averaged 5.5 points with the Utah Jazz at 2013 NBA Summer League in Orlando. Buford, who was named the Big Ten Freshman of the Year in 2009, averaged 13.7 points and 4.6 boards in 145 games as a Buckeye.
Crosby, 24, was drafted by the Maine Red Claws with the seventh pick of the seventh round (109th overall) in the 2013 NBA D-League Draft. The 6’8”, 245-pound forward played two seasons with Mississippi Valley State and was named the 2012 SWAC Player of the Year.
Evans, 23, was selected in the second round (24th overall) by the Erie BayHawks in the 2013 NBA D-League Draft. A Wisconsin product, the 6’6”, 212-pound forward scored 961 points in his college career and was named to the 2013 Big Ten All-Tournament Team.
Jones, 30, earned a GATORADE Call-Up to the Golden State Warriors last season, where he appeared briefly in two playoff games. With the Texas Legends, Jones averaged 8.8 points, 12.6 rebounds and 1.4 assists in 21 contests last season. The 6’11”, 250-pound forward/center has appeared in 82 regular season games over five seasons in the NBA for the Boston Celtics, Cleveland Cavaliers, Charlotte Bobcats and Phoenix Suns.
