Rio Grande Valley’s Jawad Williams Signs With Cleveland Cavaliers
NEW YORK, April 9, 2009 – The Cleveland Cavaliers today signed forward Jawad Williams of the Rio Grande Valley Vipers making him the 21st GATORADE Call-Up of the 2008-09 NBA Development League season. Williams joins 76 other NBA players with NBA D-League experience.
Williams, a 6-9 forward from North Carolina, has appeared in 19 games, 18 starts, for the Vipers this season and is averaging 25.7 points, 4.2 rebounds and 2.3 assists. He has scored in double figures on 17 occasions, including a season-high 43 points in a 120-116 loss to the Anaheim Arsenal on Feb. 18, 2009.
Williams appeared in nine games for the Cavaliers scoring four points in ten minutes before joining the Vipers this season. For his efforts in Rio Grande Valley, Williams was named NBA D-League Player of the Month for games played in March.
Undrafted in 2005, Williams was picked up the L.A. Clippers prior to the 2005-06 season, appearing in four preseason games. After being waived by the Clippers, Williams played overseas before earning a spot on the Cavaliers roster earlier this season.
Williams will join Cleveland today and is expected to be available on Friday, April 10, when the team travels to Philadelphia to take on the 76ers.
