LOS ANGELES, California – The Rio Grande Valley Vipers of the NBA Development League (NBA D-League), and proud affiliate of the NBA’s Houston Rockets, are proud to announce today that athletic trainer/strength & conditioning coach Joe Resendez has been named an assistant athletic trainer for the NBA’s Los Angeles Clippers.

“It’s such a great feeling to reach my life long goal of joining an NBA team after four great seasons with the Vipers,” Resendez said. “It has been a great experience working with two first class organizations. I give the Vipers and (Houston) Rockets organizations all the credit in helping me get to where I am today and for that I am thankful.”

Resendez has been the only athletic trainer and strength and conditioning coach in the history of the Vipers organization. He joined RGV before the inaugural 2007-08 season under the staff of then head coach Bob Hoffman. He has spent the last four seasons with the Vipers organization, joining the Rockets-Vipers hybrid partnership under former head coach Chris Finch before the 2009-10 season which resulted in an NBA D-League Championship.

“We are ecstatic that the Clippers organization has taken notice of Joe’s abilities and, on behalf of the entire Vipers organization, we are so proud that he is accomplishing his dream of making it to the NBA.” Vipers president Bert Garcia said. “He has been with us since day one and he is an RGV native which makes this call-up even more special for the Vipers. We wish Joe nothing but the best he takes the next step in his athletic training career with the LA Clippers.”

The Brownsville, Texas native received his bachelor’s degree in kinesiology from the University of Texas-Pan American and a master’s degree in exercise physiology from Louisiana Tech University where he also served as a graduate assistant in their athletic department. He also served as physiotherapist for the Great Britain National Futures team during the summer of 2010.

“There is a bitter-sweet feeling leaving the Rio Grande Valley and the Vipers organization,” Resendez added “I wish both the Vipers and Rockets nothing but the best as I move to another phenomenal organization in the LA Clippers.”

Resendez is not the only Vipers alum now on the basketball staff of the Clippers. Former Vipers assistant coach Robert Pack is an assistant coach with the Clippers under Vinnie Del Negro.

Resendez is the third alumnus of the Vipers basketball staff to receive an NBA Call-Up. Pack received his call-up to the New Orleans Hornets following the 2008-09 season. This off-season former head coach Chris Finch was called up by the parent Houston Rockets.
