Spurs Game Notes - 10/18/75

Spurs Notes: This is the Spurs final pre-season game for the fall and San Antonio is working on a win streak—of one game. That win came Thursday night in San Antonio over Buffalo, 101-90.

The Spurs open their regular season this coming Friday night, October 24, against the defending ABA champs, the Kentucky Colonels. That game is set for Louisville and will be televised back to San Antonio via KMOL, Channel 4. Tipoff is 6:05 p.m. San Antonio time.

The first home game for San Antonio is a week from tonight, October 25, against the New York Nets. This will be “old home day” as three Spurs—Billy Paultz, Mike Gale and Larry Kenon—all were Nets last year, while three Nets—Swen Nater, Rich Jones and Chuck Terry—were Spurs. Tipoff that night in the HemisFair Arena is 7:35 p.m. That game and all Spurs games are radioed by WOAI, 1200 on the dial. WOAI is a 50,000-watt, clear-channel station which can be heard in the Rio Grande Valley area.

There is a new, but familiar, face with the Spurs tonight. Forward William Franklin is back in the Metallic Silver and Black uniform after a brief stay with the Baltimore Claws. Franklin was picked in the equalization draft after playing with the Spurs since January of last year. He was waived by Baltimore and reclaimed by San Antonio just yesterday.

In the individual streaking department going into tonight’s game, the Spurs are hot at the free throw line. James Silas has hit 16-straight, Mike Gale nine, and Larry Kenon and George Gervin both have eight-in-a-row.

Top Games To Date: (Player-Rebounds-Assists-Points)

  • James Silas – 6-5-35

Rockets Notes: Rudy Tomjanovich, the Rockets all-star forward, will play tonight for the first time this pre-season. Rudy T. injured his back the day before fall camp opened. As a result of his playing tonight, the Houstons will have their starting lineup together for the first time.

The Rockets open their regular NBA season October 24 as do the Spurs. Houston has the unenviable task of going to Boston that night to do battle with the Celtics.

Houston’s first home game does not come until November 2 when the Milwaukee Bucks invade. This will be the first game ever in the Rockets’ new Summit arena. The Summit seats 15,600 and is located in Greenway Plaza.

In their four years in Houston, the Rockets stand 8-3 against ABA teams, and they are 2-0 this fall. Included in those figures are two losses and one win against the Spurs. That win was ne week ago in San Antonio; the score 108-95.

Injury Report: The Spurs have nothing to talk about tonight except to say Coby Dietrick still sports 13 stitches received from the elbow of Calvin Murphy from last week’s game in San Antonio. For the Rockets, Gus Bailey remained in Houston tonight trying to recover from a knee injury.

ABA vs NBA: Prior to last night, the count was 24 for the ABA and 15 for the NBA. Last night’s games featured Boston at Denver (ABA), Philadelphia at Kentucky (ABA) and Buffalo at New York Nets (ABA).

ABA Tonight:

  • New York Nets at New York Knicks
  • St. Louis vs Philadelphia at Carbondale, Ill.
  • San Antonio vs. Houston at Edinburg
  • San Diego at Utah

ABA Tomorrow:
