Mokeski Named Associate Head Coach

MCALLEN, Texas, Nov. 6, 2013 – The NBA Development League Rio Grande Valley Vipers and Houston Rockets today announced the hiring of Paul Mokeski as the Vipers’ associate head coach. Mokeski previously served as an assistant coach with the Vipers from 2009-11, and helped guide the Vipers to back-to-back NBA D-League Finals and one NBA D-League Championship in 2010. During his tenure in the NBA D-League as a head and assistant coach, Mokeski has aided in the development of 14 players to earn more than 20 GATORADE Call-Ups.

Mokeski re-joins the Vipers having spent the 2011-12 and 2012-13 seasons as the head coach of the Reno Bighorns, where he compiled a 34-54 record. He also served as an assistant coach with the Great Britain national team under former Vipers head coach and current Houston Rockets assistant Chris Finch.

A second round (20th pick, 42nd overall) of the Rockets in the 1979 NBA Draft, Mokeski played in 12 games for the Rockets during the 1979-80 season before moving onto Detroit, Cleveland, Milwaukee and Golden State during an 11-year career that saw him make the playoffs in each of his last nine seasons, advancing as far as the Eastern Conference Finals twice.

A native of Spokane, Washington, Mokseki played college basketball at the University of Kansas before playing in the NBA. Mokeski coached in Continental Basketball Association and American Basketball Association before becoming an assistant coach for the NBA D-League Fort Worth Flyers for the 2006-07 season. Mokeski spent the 2007-08 season as an assistant coach for the Charlotte Bobcats before returning to the D-League as an assistant coach for the Anaheim Arsenal during the 2008-09 season.

Rio Grande Valley will open the 2013-14 regular-season on the road at Los Angeles on Nov. 23, followed by a road game at Bakersfield on Tuesday, Nov. 26. The Vipers home opener and championship ring ceremony is slated for Friday, Nov. 29 at 7 p.m. versus the Tulsa 66ers.
