Bighorns Announce Coaching Staff for the 2008-09 NBA D-League Season
RENO, October 29, 2008 - The Reno Bighorns and head coach Jay Humphries today announced the hiring of three assistant coaches for the upcoming 2008-09 season. He will be assisted on the bench by Jason Glover, Tom Abatemarco, and Todd Okeson.
“I really feel we have a solid and experienced staff lead us to a strong first season here in Reno,” said Humphries. “Each brings a quality to the game that the players will be able to draw and learn from”.
Glover, who will wear two hats as an assistant coach and the director of basketball operations, also begins his eighth year as the Executive Director of the Nevada Basketball Academy after a highly successful 13 year college and high school coaching career. In 2004, he served as an assistant coach with the Colorado Chill of the NWBL. Prior to his stint with the Chill, he was the top assistant at the University of Nevada from 1993-1999 where he had the unique opportunity to learn first hand from two of the nation’s winningest coaches, former Nevada and Houston Head Coach Pat Foster, and ex-UNLV and Fresno State Coach Jerry Tarkanian.
Abatemarco brings extensive coaching experience from the WNBA’s Sacramento Monarchs as well as on the collegiate level with the University of Utah and Sacramento State’s Men’s Basketball. During five seasons as the Monarchs’ assistant coach, Abatemarco helped guide the team to the WNBA Western Conference Finals in 2003 and 2004, before winning the WNBA Championship in 2005.
Okeson, who will also serve as assistant director of basketball operations, returns to the Reno basketball scene following a career as a member of the Wolf Pack. During his playing career, Okeson played on teams alongside former NBA D-League players Ramon Sessions and Nick Fazekas and advanced to the NCAA’s Sweet 16. For the 2007-08 season, Okeson served as the Wolfpack’s program assistant.
The entire coaching staff will be available to meet with the public this Thursday night at the Whispering Vine, Somersett location at 5:30.
