BIGHORNS FALL TO POWERFUL TOROS
February 14, 2012
RENO, NEV.— When the Reno Bighorns allowed the Austin Toros to score 73 points in the first half of the game Tuesday night, optimism was dwindling in Reno. Even an exciting third quarter surge would not be enough as the Bighorns fell 110-118 to the powerful Toros.
Josh Selby, on assignment from the Memphis Grizzlies, made his Bighorns debut memorable with a team-high 26 points. Bobby Simmons posted 19 points and six rebounds while Zach Graham had 18 points and six rebounds for the Bighorns. The Toros big men led the way with Leo Lyons’ 27 points and Eric Dawson’s 19 points and 12 rebounds.
Down 57-73 at halftime, the Bighorns stormed back to pull within one point at the end of the third quarter. But the run was too little, too late and the Bighorns could not build on the momentum, eventually falling towards the end of the fourth quarter.
The Toros proved that size trumps all, outrebounding the Bighorns 37 to 28 and converting on 16 second chance points compared to the Bighorns four. The Bighorns shot the ball efficiently with a 58.4 shooting percentage but the Toros attempted nine more shots from the field.
The Bighorns will travel to Boise to take on the Idaho Stampede on Friday and Saturday before they return to Reno on Tuesday, February 21 to finish a three-game series against the Stampede at the Reno Events Center.
