Nov. 28, 2011

RENO, NEV.— The Reno Bighorns lost their third game of the season, falling to the Los Angeles D-Fenders 135-103. Blake Ahearn led the charge for the Bighorns with 24 points and 10 assists while Nick Fazekas added 21 points and 7 rebounds. The D-Fenders were led by Brian Hamilton with 26 points and 5 rebounds.

“Another tough loss,” said Fazekas, who shot 10 of 14 from the field. “We did some things well but a lot of things bad. We have a lot of work to do but it’s a long year and we are a work in progress.”

The game featured the first overall picks in the previous two NBA D-League Drafts. Fazekas was taken first in the 2010 draft while Jamaal Tinsley was taken first in the 2011 draft. At times during the game, they would go back and forth, with Fazekas scoring in the post and Tinsley controlling the game with 13 assists.

Both teams started the game with offensive efficiency. The Bighorns got easy buckets from Fazekas by slowing down the tempo and looking for the big man in the post. Fazekas capitalized with an array of hook shots and floaters that proved to be effective. Meanwhile, the D-Fenders used an up-tempo offensive rhythm to get easy buckets on fast breaks and the first quarter ended tied at 38.

The second quarter saw the Bighorns start fast and take over the lead, but it wouldn't last long. The D-Fenders pressured defensively, forcing the Bighorns into turnovers which led to easy points on the other end of the floor. Brian Costner scored 20 points in the half while the D-Fenders built a 76-61 lead going into halftime. Ahearn finished the half with 16 points and 5 assists to lead the Bighorns, while Fazekas added 15 points and 4 rebounds.

The D-Fenders continued the defensive pressure throughout the second half, leading to easy points off turnovers. They shot 62.5% from the field, including 66.7% from the behind the three-point line. Bighorns’ Zach Graham played well in his first start with the team, chipping in 23 points and 6 rebounds in the loss.

The Bighorns next game is Wednesday, November 30 in El Segundo against the D-Fenders. The team returns to Reno on December 2nd for their home opener against the Jam at the Reno Events Center.
