Played all four years of collegiate career at the University of Pittsburgh, where he started 119 of 127 games and holds the all-time records for assists with 785 and steals with 298. He is also third on the all-time three-pointers made list with 209. Ranks 12th on Pittsburgh’s all-time scoring list with 1,440 points. Participated in training camp with the Sacramento Kings of the NBA.
Started all 33 games of his senior season at point guard for the Panthers, averaging 11.2 points, 6.3 assists, 2.1 steals and 3.5 rebounds in 32.9 minutes per game. Brandin was a 2002-03 Player of the Year candidate and two-time Wooden National Player of the Year nominee. He was also named a Naismith National Player of the Year candidate and preseason Big East Player of the Year. Scored a season-high 22 points, including five three-pointers, and grabbed five rebounds against Rhode Island Dec. 21, 2002.
Led Pittsburgh to the winningest season in school history his junior season, starting all 35 games and averaging a team-high 15.6 points, 7.2 assists (second in the Big East) and 4.8 rebounds. Selected third-team All-American by the Associated Press and was named 2002 Big East Co-Player of the Year, as well as being named the Big East’s Most Improved Player. Set Pittsburgh’s single-season assist record at 251 when Pittsburgh faced Central Connecticut State in the first round of the NCAA tournament. One of only six players nationally to average more than 10.0 points, 6.0 assists and 4.0 rebounds per game.
As a sophomore, averaged 5.5 assists per game (fifth in the Big East), 9.2 points, and 2.2 steals. Recorded his first career double-double with 11 assists and 10 points in a victory over Notre Dame in the second round of the Big East Tournament. Poured in his highest-scoring game of the year with 21 points against Miami in the Big East conference opener. Posted his 100th career steal versus Syracuse Jan. 6, 2001.
As a freshman, led all Big East freshmen in assists with 5.5 and steals with 2.7 per game. Finished season as 18th in the country in steals and tied a school record with seven steals against Nebraska. Finished second on the team with 10 blocked shots. In his collegiate debut versus Wright State, posted 10 points and six assists.
Led his high school basketball team to three consecutive state championships and a final national ranking of four in the USA Today poll. Brother of former Stanford star Brevin Knight who now plays for the NBA’s Washington Wizards.
