Reno-Sparks Convention and Visitors Authority to Host Third Consecutive NBA D-League Showcase
NEW YORK, July 25, 2013 – The Reno-Sparks Convention and Visitors Authority (RSCVA) will for the third consecutive season host the NBA Development League Showcase at the Reno Events Center, the NBA D-League announced today in conjunction with Reno Bighorns Managing Partner Herb Santos, Jr., and Christopher Baum, President and CEO of the RSCVA. The 2014 NBA D-League Showcase will run over five days from Jan. 5-9 and will feature all 17 NBA D-League teams.
“We’re pleased to return to Reno an unprecedented third year in a row for the 2014 NBA D-League Showcase,” said Reed. “The Showcase has established itself as the premiere in-season NBA scouting event and has helped propel numerous NBA careers. We’re confident that our players and coaches, as well as NBA scouts, will again enjoy their experience in Reno during this very important event. We’re excited to partner with the RSCVA once again and look forward to another successful week in Reno.”
Conceived prior to the 2004-05 season, the NBA D-League Showcase provides an opportunity for NBA D-League players and coaches to perform in front of NBA general managers, player personnel executives and scouts over five consecutive days at one location. The 2014 event will feature each NBA D-League team competing in two games each over five days. During the event’s nine year history, 40 NBA D-League players have earned GATORADE Call-Ups from the NBA D-League to the NBA during or in the week following the NBA D-League Showcase, while an even larger number have benefited from the Showcase’s exposure.
2013 NBA Champion Jarvis Varnado headlines the list of players to participate in the 2013 NBA D-League Showcase and subsequently earn a GATORADE Call-Up. He’s joined by Mike James, who used the event as a springboard to a season-long contract with the Dallas Mavericks and Shelvin Mack, who was called-up first by the Philadelphia 76ers and later the Atlanta Hawks, where he finished the season.
“We’re delighted to have the NBA Development League Showcase returning for the third year in a row to Reno Tahoe USA,” said Baum. “With the fantastic lineup of sporting events held annually throughout this destination, the Showcase is a natural fit, and it always raises the bar for professional competition in northern Nevada. We’re looking forward to another impressive display of NBA talent right here in Reno Tahoe USA.”
The Bighorns, who entered into a single-affiliation partnership with the Sacramento Kings earlier this month, enjoyed a 2012-13 campaign in which four NBA players were assigned to hone their games in Reno while one Bighorn earned a GATORADE Call-Up to the NBA. In all, the NBA D-League posted a record-breaking season with a record 58 individual NBA players being assigned to their NBA D-League affiliate a record 184 times. Additionally, 31 NBA D-League players earned 36 GATORADE Call-ups to the NBA during the 2012-13 season. At the conclusion of the 2012-13 NBA season, 30 percent of players on NBA rosters had spent time in the NBA D-League, including 40 percent of the 2012 NBA Draft class.
"Once again, the basketball world will be focused on our community as we host the NBA Development League Showcase for a record third year in a row,” said Santos, Jr. "We have the best partners in the world in the RSCVA, our hotel resorts and restaurants, our fans, our beautiful Reno Events Center and the Bighorns staff and I’m excited for the team to come together to make the Showcase another unforgettable event. Fans will be able to be up close and personal for five days of non-stop, professional basketball – it’s truly an event to remember."
Game times as well as the broadcast schedule for the 2014 NBA D-League Showcase will be announced at a later date.
