NEW YORK, March 23, 2012 – The Dallas Mavericks today assigned newly-acquired guard/forward Kelenna Azubuike to the Texas Legends, the Mavericks’ NBA Development League affiliate. The assignment marks the record 56th time an NBA player has been assigned to his NBA D-League affiliate during the 2011-12 season, and it is the first assignment for Azubuike since being signed by Dallas earlier today.
Dallas today signed Azubuike (6-5, 215) as a free agent, having spent much of last season on the New York Knicks roster, when he was sidelined with a torn patella tendon. Prior to his tenure with the Knicks, Azubuike played 205 games with the Golden State Warriors over four seasons. He holds NBA career averages of 10.6 points, 4.0 rebounds and 24.4 minutes, shooting 46 percent from the field and 41 percent from three-point range.
Azubuike returns to the NBA D-League where he played with the Fort Worth Flyers. He appeared in 53 games for the Flyers during the 2005-06 and 2006-07 seasons, averaging 15.6 points, 4.2 rebounds, 1.8 assists and 29.3 minutes, before earning a GATORADE Call-Up to the Warriors in January 2006.
A standout at the University of Kentucky, Azubuike was an un-drafted early entry candidate in the 2005 NBA Draft. He averaged 14.7 points as a junior, leading the Wildcats to a Southeastern Conference title and an NCAA Elite Eight appearance on his way to being named All-SEC Second Team.
Mavericks fans can stay in step with Azubuike, who is expected to join the Legends today and be available Saturday night when the team hosts the Reno Bighorns, by logging onto nba.com/futurecast to watch all of Texas’ games live, online, for free.
