Rod Benson of the Dakota Wizards made history on Sunday night when he set a D-League single game record with 28 rebounds in a win over Sioux Falls. Benson, who is leading the D-League with 14.5 rebounds per game, was named the D-League Performer of the Week for his efforts. The 6-10 forward from California, who is also known for his popular blog TooMuchRodBenson.com, spoke to D-League.com's Matthew Brennan about his record-setting game and his newest endeavor as a blogger for Yahoo! Rod Benson: "I wouldnt say I expected it, but I knew it was possible. I had 21 rebounds in 24 minutes in a game last season, so I figured if I came out and set a goal then I could get it done."
Where you aware of how many rebounds you had while the game was going on?
Rod Benson:"Actually I had set a goal before the game to get 25, and I told one of my teammates about it. During the game they kept updating me, telling me five more, three more, two more. So I had a pretty good idea of what was going on during the game."
Your numbers are up by a good amount this season. Other than more playing time, what are some of the main factors in your improvement? Rod Benson: "I played the whole summer in different minicamps and in the summer league. I was also in an NBA training camp with the Nets during the preseason, so I really knew about the things that I needed to come back and focus on this season. It also really helps to have teammates that let me get the rebounds and take off and do what they have to do. As long as I do what I have to do then we are good."
Did did your experience with the Nets in training camp help you as a basketball player? Rod Benson: "Absolutely. You go in there and play against the best basketball players in the world, then you really have no choice but to get better and benefit from the experience."
Have you heard anything about any NBA scouts or teams that are interested in you? Rod Benson: "It's still early in the season. I still need to improve on some things when it comes to consistency. My agent is going to be on the horn trying to make moves for me, so hopefully he can work something out."
The Wizards return a lot of players from last season, but also have some new faces like any D-League team. How is the team coming together so far this season?
Rod Benson: "It always takes a little bit of time when you have a new coach and couple of new teammates. But everyone is starting to find their niche in the system and we are all starting to really prosper from it and we have won our last two games."
You recently started to blog for Yahoo! Sports, what subjects are you going to be blogging about? Rod Benson: "Well the guys from Yahoo! emailed me and told me that they would love to have me do something for their website. We spent a few weeks talking about the logistics, and I am going to have a three day a week blog on Yahoo! Sports. Basically I am going to write about everything regarding the D-League, living in Bismarck, all of the above."
