The North Charleston Lowgators successfully rounded out the summer with the second session of the
Anthony Johnson Basketball Camp for children. The first camp session was held during the week of June 30 to July 4 at the Isle of Palm Recreation Department, and the second session took place at the Salvation Army Fieldhouse in West Ashley from July 30 to August 1. Children at each camp enjoyed a week of learning from experienced players and coaches while improving their basketball skills.
Camp Coach Sedric Webber led his team to the Camp Finals
Indiana Pacers star Anthony Johnson and his talented staff were on hand at both sessions of camp to help develop the individual basketball skills of each child as well as team fundamentals for boys and girls ages 5-14.
Johnson, who once played in the NBDL, is most notably recognized for his appearance in the NBA Finals the last two years with the New Jersey Nets.
“We had two outstanding sessions this summer. I really appreciate the parents allowing their kids to come to camp. I hope the kids enjoyed it as much as I did.” Anthony Johnson said.
The campers received instruction from staff members such as Lowgators Forward Sedric Webber and College of Charleston star Wilma Simpson. Both guest speakers at the camp, Lowgators Head Coach Doug Marty and former College of Charleston Head Coach John Kresse, stressed the importance of practice and maintaining good grades in school.
Throughout the week of camp, campers worked on both offense and defense fundamentals with personalized instruction from coaches. The children were divided into teams representing either the NCAA or NBA, depending upon age. The teams competed against one another to make it to the camp finals on Friday of each week.
Coach Kresse talked about the importance of academics
There was a notable improvement of skill amongst the campers throughout the week. Each child had fun making friends and becoming a better basketball player. "I've had so much fun. I don't want camp to be over!" said one camper. All of the campers were sad to see camp come to end but could not wait to see AJ and his staff again next year.
Campers at both Anthony Johnson Basketball Camp sessions received 2 ‘Hoopin’ with AJ’ T-shirts, an AJ basketball, NBA merchandise from teams such as the Cavs and Rockets, camper evaluations and prizes, and individual and team awards.
The Lowgators provided each camper with 2 tickets to a home game during the upcoming season. Al, the players, and the staff look forward to seeing campers at games to join in the excitement of 'hoopin' with the Lowgators.
