Mike Wilks Signs 10-Day Contract With Timberwolves

GREENVILLE (February 12, 2003) – Former Huntsville Flight guard Mike Wilks has signed a 10-day contract with the Minnesota Timberwolves, according to an announcement today by Timberwolves Vice President of Basketball Operations/General Manager Kevin McHale. Fifteen NBDL players have been called up to the NBA on 16 different occasions, signing various types of contracts since the league began play in November 2001. The NBDL had eight callups all of last season and has already equaled that total with six weeks still left to play in its second season.

Rounding out NBDL callups this season are Devin Brown from Fayetteville to San Antonio, Bobby Simmons from Mobile to Washington, Rafer Alston from Mobile to Toronto, Corey Benjamin from North Charleston to Atlanta, Damone Brown from North Charleston to Toronto and Mikki Moore from Roanoke to Boston.

Wilks, a 5-11 guard from Rice University, was one of the final cuts by the Milwaukee Bucks in training camp this past fall. He then played 16 games for Huntsville, averaging 10.8 points, 3.8 rebounds and 3.6 assists.

The Atlanta Hawks signed Wilks as a free agent on Dec. 24, 2002 and waived him on Jan. 7, 2003. The Hawks then signed Wilks to a 10-day contract on Jan. 9 before re-signing him to a second 10-day contract on Jan. 20. In 15 games with Atlanta, Wilks averaged 5.7 points, 2.7 rebounds and 2.8 assists. He scored a career-high 19 points at Miami on Dec. 30 and dished out a career-high 10 assists at Philadelphia on Jan. 29.

A native of Milwaukee, Wis., Wilks spent the 2001-02 season playing in the NBDL with the Mobile Revelers and Huntsville, averaging 9.1 points, 3.6 rebounds and 4.0 assists in 44 games.

The Timberwolves placed guard Rod Strickland on the Injured List. Strickland, who is averaging 7.1 points and 4.5 assists per game this season, suffered a strained left groin in the Jan. 27 contest vs. San Antonio and has been sidelined for the past five games. He must remain on the Injured List for a minimum of five games.
