Marty Blake's Top Prospects for the 2003 NBDL Draft

NEW YORK, Nov. 5 -- With the National Basketball Development League's third annual player draft set for Thursday, Nov. 6 at 7 p.m. ET, NBA Director of Scouting Marty Blake sat down with NBDL.com to give his analysis of some of the top prospects for the 2003 NBDL Draft.

Four of last year's eight first-round selections went on to play in the NBA (Mikki Moore, Devin Brown, Bobby Simons and Corey Benjamin) as the league continues to serve as a talent pool for the 29 NBA teams.

Also eligible in this year's NBDL Draft are two players with quite a bit of NBA experience:
Lavor Postell: 6-5, 205 lb. SG; St. John's; Knicks 00-03; Jazz Vet Camp '03 (61 NBA games)
Mateen Cleaves: 6-2, 205 lbs.; Michigan State; Pistons 00-01, Kings 01-03; Celtics Vet Camp '03 (122)

DRAFT PROSPECTS TO WATCH:

Blake's Allocated Players to Watch

Patrick Pope (Fayetteville)
"He's from St. Augustines of the CIAA, which is usually considered the best division of Division II. Allocated to Fayetteville. Pope has great qiuickness, inside-outside game. He's a terrific player. He has great individiaul skills, reminds me of Darrell Armstrong when he was at Fayetteville State. I think Pope has a lot of things going for him."

Andre Smith (Asheville)
"He played in the Portsmouth Invitational and was very impressive. He's a point guard and was All-Conference in the Big South."

Derrick Bird (Columbus)
"Out of Auburn, Bird is an outstanding three-point shooter. He needs to work on his ball handling and he needs to develop more of a team concept."

Jermaine Hall (Columbus)
"He's a small forward, and a little undersized. He was a three-time All-Conference player at Wagner. The question is whether he can be converted to a position in which he can eventually play in the NBA."

Germaine Chase
Blake: "A small forward from Angelo State in Texas, Chase is a multiple position player, he's left-handed, and he averaged 17.1 points per game last year. He's a Lamar Odom type. He has versatility. His stats show that he can shoot the three. He just needs to get stronger and play against better competition."

Demario Jones
Blake: "At 6-7, 220 from Central Oklahoma, Jones averaged 18.7 last year. He can play small forward, small guard, he can handle the ball. He's a big-time athlete, a slasher who excels in the transition game. He needs to get stronger and he needs to work on his offensive game, especially from the outside."

Marque Perry
Blake: "Perry is a very tough defensive player from St. Louis, a great defender. He has been to a number of camps. All he needs is more experience."

Antonio Meeking
Blake: "Meeking is a great post player from Louisiana Tech. When he first came to Lousiana Tech, they were comparing him to Karl Malone. He had a couple of tryouts and was in the Bucks' camp this year. He needs to work on his offensive game, get in better shape, but he has chance to play in the NBA."

Erick Barkley
Blake: "Barkley just needs the opportunity to mature. He struggles with the point guard mentality, but has the ability to develop into a solid NBA point guard."

Sam Clancy
Blake: "Had he not suffered a serious injury during his senior year, Clancy would have been a first round draft choice out of USC (Clancy sustained a knee injury during a pre-draft workout with the Phoenix Suns on May 13). He ended up going in the second round to Philadelphia and spent the 2002-03 season on the injured list."

Antonio Meeking was in camp with the Bucks.

Phil Ricci
Blake: "Ricci played center at Oregon State and was all-Pac 10 last year. He has certainly gone under a weight program and he is going to play power forward in the D-League."

Matt Laur
Blake: "Playing for McKendree (D-III), Laur was considered the best passing senior center in all of basketball last year. He needs to get some experience and tone up his body, but he is an unbelievable ball handler for a guy who's 6-11. He doesn't have great mobility, but he's great passer and he can block shots. He needs to work on his footwork and his mobility."

OTHERS TO KEEP AN EYE ON:
Rod Grizzard ... "who everybody thought was potentially a first rounder out of Alabama, but he didn't make it."
Kevin Lyde ... "from Temple, one of the few centers available."
Rolan Roberts ... "SIU, great inside player, very good scorer."
Ronald Dupree ... "6-7, 210, surprised everyone, was not drafted, from LSU."
Victor Williams ... "PG from Okahoma State."
Kent Williams ... "was a very prolific scorer, can play two positions."
Kueth Duany ... "Syracuse, very athletic player."
Courtney James ... "veteran power forward who has played some center."
Adam Hall ... "small forward trying to play at the two-guard spot."
Uche Okafor ... "international player who would have started for Missouri but couldn't cut it academically, only played organized ball for four or five years."
