BROWN KEEPS DELIVERING
Devin Brown, the 2003 NBDL Most Valuable Player and Rookie of the Year, continued to turn heads with his stellar play in the Reebok Pro Summer League in Boston. The former
Fayetteville Patriots star averaged 15.2 points per game for the San Antonio Spurs on the way to a Reebok Pro Summer League First Team selection. Media reports out of San Antonio and Fayetteville have Brown signing a contract with the Spurs last week.
GILL BREATHES LIFE FROM LINE
Former Asheville Altitude point guard Eddie Gill led all free throw shooters who had more than 10 free throw attempts by converting 17-of-18 (.944) for San Antonio at the Reebok Rocky Mountain Revue. Gill finished second in steals per game in Utah with 2.00. He was also among the league leaders at the Reebok Pro Summer League in Boston, finishing seventh in assists per game at 5.5.
NATE KEEPS SCORING
Nate Johnson, who led the NBDL and the
Columbus Riverdragons in scoring with 19.5 points per game last season, kept up the pace by finishing among the top 15 point producers in Boston. Johnson averaged 13.3 points per game for the San Antonio Spurs summer entry. He also led the Spurs with a .596 field-goal percentage (28-for-47 overall).
ROCKY MOUNTAIN REJECTOR
The first player ever selected in an NBDL Draft, former Fayetteville Patriot and current Denver Nugget Chris Andersen, led the Reebok Rock Mountain Revue in blocked shots per game with 2.17. Andersen, who was selected by the Patriots in 2001, was also among the top five field goal shooters at the Revue by converting 19-of-31 (.613). For good measure, Andersen averaged 10.3 points and 6.3 rebounds for the Nuggets in the Southern California Summer Pro League.
THE COLLECTORS
Former NBDLers Derek Hood and Tyrone Ellis spent their time at the summer leagues working on their collections. For Hood, who played the last two seasons for the Mobile Revelers, it was rebounds he was collecting, leading the Dallas Mavericks and finishing as the seventh-leading rebounder at the Reebok Pro Summer League in Boston with 6.3 pg. Ellis, who played with the Huntsville Flight in 2001-02 and was also summering with the Mavs, preferred more covert work, finishing third at the Reebok Rocky Mountain Revue with 1.83 steals per game.
HONEYMOONING IN STITCHES
Guard Luke Recker, who played for the Asheville Altitude last season and the Boston Celtics in the Reebok Pro Summer League in Boston, took an elbow above his left eye from New York Knicks center Maciej Lampe that required six stitches to close. Shortly thereafter, Recker left the league for his wedding, telling the Boston Herald ''(My fiancée will) be real happy about this.''
CHAMPIONSHIP COMMENTARY
Sam Vincent, who coached the Mobile Revelers to the 2003 NBDL Championship, took the opportunity to work the summer leagues from a little different perspective. Vincent, who was also part of an NBA championship team as a player with the Boston Celtics, put on the headsets and worked as a television commentator for NBA TV during summer league play.
